Botswana's tourist capital, Maun, is one of the busiest centres in the country and the perfect gateway to the Delta.

Only a few hours from Maun, travellers can find themselves in the Okavango - the largest inland delta in the world and the Moremi Game Reserve, which is one of the most beautiful reserves in the Africa.

Flights to Maun

In recent years Maun has developed rapidly from a rural frontier town and has spread along the wide Thamalakane River. It now has good shopping centres, hotels and lodges, as well as car and 4-wheel drive vehicle hire. However, it does still retain its rural atmosphere and local tribesmen continue to bring their cattle here to sell and you might even see antelopes grazing along the riverbanks.

The ideal time to visit Maun is during the winter months from May to October when rainfall is low and the days are warm and cloudless, but nights can be cold. November to April can be very hot and high levels of rainfall are between December and February.

Kasane

Situated on the Chobe River in the northeast of Botswana, Kasane is a busy little town allowing easy access to the Chobe National Park, which has the Africa's largest concentration of elephants.
Kasane has a great location along the main tourist routes where four countries meet - Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia. This location is great for access to the Chobe National Park, Namibia's Caprivi Strip to the west and the Victoria Falls to the east on the Zimbabwe/Zambian border. In recent years this has led to rapid expansion. Kasane now has a number of garages, banks, shops and river lodges, as well as an international airport just 4km out of town.

Flights to Kasane

There are no boundary fences between the park and the village so it is common to see game such as Elephant and Hippo wandering down the road and through the Kasane campsites. Kasane is also a popular fishing safari destination. A wide variety of fish species can be found in the waterways off Kasane including tigerfish and bream.

Across the Chobe river from Kasane are the flat grassy plains of Sedudu Island, a grazing ground for elephant, hippo and buffalo, a brilliant site for game viewing and bird watching. If you're looking for leopards, a number of large dead trees along the Sedudu Valley Road are ideal for spotting these elusive animals, which are plentiful in the area.

The Kasane Hot Springs natural mineral spa and Inchingo fishing camp, which is an excellent area for fishing, are worth a visit while in the village, as well as the regular sundowner river cruises - sunset over the Chobe River is arguably one of the most photographed in Africa. A trip on the rapids of the Chobe River and a visit to the old hollow baobab tree, which has an interesting history are a must. A great place for a picnic is near the Kasane Rapids and ideal for bird watching including unusual species like the African finfoot and the half-collared kingfisher.

Johannesburg

Larger than London or New York, Johannesburg is a city of contrasts where enormous amounts of wealth live alongside desperate poverty. If you're on a discovery of South Africa, Johannesburg has to be on your itinerary.

The remnants of its 19th-century industrial past were for years left to rust as the city moved on, but today they are being polished up and assimilated into its new, cleaner image. Johannesburg, an international metropolis, offers the best available entertainment, cuisine and nightlife in South Africa.

Flights to Johanesburg

The Soweto Art Gallery is a must see to experience the collection of artwork from the townships. If you want to learn more about South Africa's history in chilling detail take a visit to the Apartheid Museum. For stunning views over the city take a trip up the ‘Top of Africa' one evening and enjoy the restaurant while you're up there too.

There are numerous activities on offer in Johannesburg including Golf, although it can be expensive for a round and some clubs require you to be a member. There are some great hiking trails around the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, and a great way to see the city itself is to take a walking tour around some areas like Sandton, Troyeville, Parktown or Alexandra. Ellis Park, the headquarters of rugby union, is the ideal place to see some rugby on a Saturday afternoon. If you're a cricket fan you cannot miss a trip to the Wanderers Cricket Ground, one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world.

The culture of South Africa is also being welcomed and nurtured in the city where once it was shunned. Modern Afrikaans plays are performed in the many theatres, examining the past and future of the country. In amongst the department stores and skyscrapers you can find lively bazaars and street stalls selling everything from "muti" medicine to ethnic snacks. Johannesburg is a place where you can get a 50-cent shave and a 500-dollar haircut within a block of one another - and that makes it a fascinating slice of South African-style urban living.
